Who can apply?
Between £1,000 and £10,000
The aim is to provide funding for groups core costs – meaning expenditure that is not connected to delivering projects but focusing on investing in the organisation as a whole, such as basic running costs. We know securing core funding can be tough and want to use this programme to help support those doing much needed work in their local communities.
Your organisation should be contributing to one of these outcomes:
- Connected communities: seeking to improve inclusion and cohesion in communities
- Productive communities: investing in local residents to help them solve the issues they are facing using local people and resources
- Empowered communities: working to empower marginalised and disadvantaged communities
Priority will be given to small, locally based and local run groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community and are undertaking actions as a means of addressing these needs. Depending on the quality and volume of applications received priority will be given to:
- Those that are new to Comic Relief and/or Community Foundation funding
- Those in areas of high deprivation
- Those in geographically underfunded areas
- Those with lived experience, where people directly affected by the issues are involved in all levels of the organisation
- Those with innovative approaches, to respond to clearly defined need
- Those demonstrating effective practice, with evidence that the methodology being used will be successful

Update on NatWest Skills & Opportunities Fund – deadline announced – Friday 22 September 2017
We are giving away a further £1m of community funding:
Almost 9 in 10 of us have benefitted from the work of a charity, according to the latest Social Landscape Report compiled by The Charities Aid Foundation and ACEVO – highlighting just what an essential role charities (as well as other not-for-profit organisations) play in our communities.
It’s just one of many reasons that we’re delighted to announce that we’re making a further £1m of community funding available to not-for-profit organisations in England and Wales through our Skills & Opportunities Fund.
Applications for R2 2017 are open from Friday 1 to Friday 22 September 2017 and not-for-profit organisations, including community groups, social enterprises and state-funded schools and colleges with eligible projects are invited to apply for grants of up to £35k.
The projects that we fund focus on helping people in some of the most disadvantaged communities in England and Wales to access the skills and opportunities they need to build their financial capability or to start or develop a new business.
Here’s how one previous winner, Cinque Ports Community Kitchen CIC, has been using their Skills & Opportunities funding to improve the prospects of 26 unemployed young people in the East Kent area:
“Our Keen2Cater courses include practical, hands-on hospitality training in our teaching kitchen, as well as targeted help to solve financial, personal and practical barriers to work.
At the end of each course, participants plan, prepare and serve a meal to invited guests, including local employers and dignitaries – not only does this experience provide them with real-life experience of commercial catering, it also boosts their self-confidence, hopefully helping to kick start and sustain a career in the industry.”
