Southampton Community Launch of the Mayflower 400 commemorations.

We are working with the Council Libraries team to launch our programme to the community. We will have an event in each of the six clusters w/c 21st January, and hope to have at least one local councillor for each if diaries allow. We will have a short presentation of programme highlights, and also plan to have a choral performance from Southampton Music Hub for at least one of the events.

The proposed schedule is;

Monday 21st January 3:00pm Central Library

Monday 21st January 5:30pm Shirley Library

Tuesday 22nd January 5:30pm Woolston Library

Wednesday 23rd January 5:30pm Bitterne Library

Thursday 24th January 5:30pm Lordshill Library

Friday 25th January 3:00pm Portswood Library

We have four objectives for this series of events:

  • Unveil the framework for the commemoration year with events and partners that have been confirmed to date
  • Open a community consultation process, whereby we ask the people of Southampton how they want to participate in THEIR commemoration
  • As we tell the story of the Mayflower, we also want to collect the stories of Southampton – particularly those that have to do with journeys / migration
  • We want to encourage the people of Southampton to sign up to volunteer for one or more events during the year

In partnership with Artful Scribe we plan to award three local writers with paid commissions for new writing to be read at the launch events. Details are here if you would like to share with your members.
