Southampton 2025 – City of Culture

Bidding to become UK City of Culture 2025 is a huge opportunity for Southampton. The competition, which is run every four years, brings great cultural, artistic, social and economic benefits to the winning city.

Throughout November and December, the Southampton UK City of Culture bid team are holding city wide consultations in order to gather ideas for the city’s bid.  Led by Bid Director, Claire Whitaker OBE, the team are conducting 29 virtual focus groups covering all aspects of culture; from food to sport and music.  The bid team includes Kate Maple, Curator at Solent Showcase Gallery, who brings her wealth of expertise in the arts to the shaping of the bid.

Listening to the residents of Southampton is at the heart of the consultation phase and The UK City of Culture programme will be shaped having identified the need of our local community.

We have a short online survey that we are asking everyone in Southampton to complete. We want people of every age, faith, ability, race and sexual orientation from across Southampton to share their ideas with us and to have a say in shaping the future of our city.  We want the whole of Southampton to get involved and help us win the bid.  A link to the survey, which will close on December 13th, can be found on the City of Culture website.

Some of you will recall Claire Whitaker , Bid Director coming along to one of SVS Friday Forums to outline Southampton City of Culture bid proposals and SVS is strongly supporting the bid and urges all local voluntary to also do so. Please think about how you can encourage your members and beneficiaries to be part of this exciting journey and how culture is reflected in all you do in different ways to support peoples wellbeing and help the city thrive.
