New round of grant funding opens for applications for local communities
Southampton City Council has re-opened its community grant funding for applications. This year local community and voluntary organisations have two grant schemes to choose from.
The long running Community Chest grant scheme is back, with a renewed focus on bringing people together from different communities and generations and building stronger neighbourhoods and communities. Grants of up to £2,500 are available for projects that build bridges between communities and generations or build stronger neighbourhoods and communities.
The Celebrations Grant proved so popular in its first round it has been decided to continue to provide funding for small community events throughout 2019. Grants of up to £500 are available for one-off events in celebration of national and international days and weeks, such as World Mental Health Day, International Youth Day, UN International Day of Peace, St George’s Day, the Big Lunch and the Great Get Together.
Alongside the community groups, the Events and Festivals grant is also being offered again this year. This aims to support public events to develop and grow, creating a vibrant calendar of events throughout the year. Previous grants have helped support Southampton Pride and the new ‘Day of Art’ event.
Commenting on the awards Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Councillor Dave Shields said:
“We have a had a fantastic response from local community organisations who share with us a keen wish to make our communities stronger, bring people together and celebrate what is good about Southampton and its different communities. It is especially important at this particular time to emphasise how Southampton is a fair and inclusive city, welcoming to people from all backgrounds.”
This award round follows £8,311 being awarded to local community and voluntary organisations to hold community events celebrating St George’s Day in April 2019, the Big Lunch and the Great Get Together, both in June 2019, through the Celebrations Grants. These grants bring together people from different backgrounds or neighbourhoods to enjoy a community event together.
