July 5 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Employment Support – July 5th 2019

The session showcased the wide range of employment support that is being offered by different organisations in Southampton, with 30 people in attendance.  Groups spoke about their offer, referral routes, what’s working well and the barriers they face.   Speakers were:

Society of St James | Saints Foundation | No Limits | Southampton City Council | WEA | Prince’s Trust | DWP | CLEAR | SAFE | Social Enterprise Link | Steps to Wellbeing | Solent Credit Union

Notes from the presentations will be uploaded to this page in the next two weeks.

An open discussion followed, focusing on opportunities for collaboration and overcoming barriers.

  • It was noted there is often duplication in providers working with the same client, and that it is also not easy to know if there are other schemes available which may be more appropriate.
  • ACTION – SCC is currently updating its Access Southampton It was suggested this could contain a flow chart for organisations to understand what else is available, alongside a directory.  It was noted the Street Support website is a good model for providing information in a way that is user friendly for both organisations and clients.  Rob Kurn (SVS), David Swieton (SCC) and Sara Warry (SCC) to take this forward.
  • David Swieton spoke about the SCC’s Employment and Skills Plan, and how through planning this levers in opportunities for local jobs in major city development.
  • ACTION – Groups were encouraged to contact David Swieton with their details to be included in the plan, thus widening the net.  David.Swieton@Southampton.gov.uk
  • In terms of barriers criminal convictions were seen as a major barrier to employment.
  • ACTION – Approach NACRO to provide training to local groups and explore links with probation. David Swieton to liaise with Rob Kurn.

Many thanks to the speakers and all those present for their contribution.  Particular thanks to Polly Whitaker, Society of St James, for suggesting the forum topic and helping to organise.

Rob Kurn, Deputy CEO
