Establishing Community Land Trusts in Southampton
November 12 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Social Enterprise link is hosting a foundation meeting for establishing Community Land Trusts in Southampton.
“Community land trusts are set up and run by ordinary people to develop and manage homes as well as other assets. CLT’s act as long-term stewards of housing and land based assets, ensuring that it remains genuinely affordable, based on what people actually earn in their area, not just for now but for every future occupier”.
We would like to invite anyone interested in helping establish one or more Community Land Trusts in Southampton. Please pass this on or talk about it to colleagues, friends and groups you might be involved with.
Some examples that might inspire you;
Thrift CLT, East Cambridge is in negotiation with local authority East Cambridgeshire District Council to take on the affordable housing component of a 600-unit urban extension, in partnership with a housing association and the local authority.
Granby 4 Streets Liverpool started life as a community-run market and guerilla gardening group, in a neighbourhood broken up by successive demolition plan as part of the Liverpool Housing Market Renewal Initiative. Over time, this evolved into a CLT with a strong vision: to reinstate their streets as a thriving, vibrant multi-racial, multi-cultural area. They have been given the freehold of 10 properties in the area by Liverpool City Council, and will refurbish these as permanently affordable housing. In phase 2, their project will refurbish derelict shops, an arts and retail hub and a community cafe.
Bristol CLT: With work just about to start on their first self-build scheme at Fishponds, Bristol CLT is now expanding onto a second development in the city, on a backlands site which has resisted development for many years. The CLT is a focal point for self-build interest in the city, and has done some exemplary community-led design work to secure support for the new development and to bring together local residents in housing need. The new scheme will develop around 50 new homes in partnership with a local housing association.
