Recruiting Volunteers?

Southampton Voluntary Services(SVS)offers an array of services designed to help and support everyone who works with volunteers.

The SVS Volunteering Development Team work in partnership with Voluntary and Community Organisations, the Private & Public Sector, and individuals; interested in volunteering, to broker mutually beneficial relationships.

Charities and Voluntary Organisations can gain added value by including volunteers in their work. They can bring a diverse range of expertise, support for staff and satisfaction to the organisation of knowing that they are helping others benefit. Not only this, but they can also become great advocates, passing on their volunteering experiences to others.

Recruiting Volunteers

Whether you’re a volunteer manager, running a volunteer centre or involved with volunteers in any capacity. We can help you find and recruit volunteers.

The SVS Volunteering Development Team can offer advice and support on recruitment of Volunteers and Best Practice over the phone. The Team can also meet with volunteer coordinators and trustees to offer more detailed guidance and support.

How we can help you recruit volunteers :

Southampton Voluntary Services Can Promote Your Volunteering Opportunities

  • Online at www.do-it.org.uk a national volunteering website, potential volunteers can search and apply for volunteering opportunities.
  • In-house at Volunteering Information Sessions, potential volunteers can obtain further information about becoming a volunteer, look through current opportunities and apply for them. This also happens during the SVS the ‘Late Night Drop-in’ Volunteer Information Session.
  • Across Hampshire, SVS can pass on your opportunity details for promotion across the County if applicable.
  • SVS has links with both Universities in Southampton and can pass on your opportunity details for promotion to the local student population.
  • For SVS to promote your opportunities you will need to fill out an Opportunity Registration Form, this will ask for detailed information about the volunteering role.

If volunteers express an interest in your opportunity SVS will contact you directly with information about the volunteer. It will then be your responsibility to contact the volunteer and give them further details about your recruitment processes.
You will need to keep SVS up to date with any changes to your contact details or the volunteering role, including when the role has been filled.

The Recruitment Process

Every Organisation has a different recruitment process, this can be determined by the type of volunteering role, the organisations resources and the procedures that are already in place. For example the role may or may not require a Criminal Records Bureau Check. In order for a successful recruitment process organisations need to plan ahead. Southampton Voluntary Services can provide advice on developing a recruitment process and recruitment materials.

Tips on the recruitment of trustees:

Trustees oversee and guide the work of organisations. Being a trustee is about working together. It’s a challenging role and not to be taken lightly – the trustees bear ultimate legal and financial responsibility if something goes wrong in the organisation’s work or finances. Most trustee boards will have a chair, normally appointed from the existing trustees, and a treasurer.
Many organisations find it hard to recruit people with sufficient experience and knowledge to carry out the duties of treasurer.
Some trustees will have been involved in setting up the organisation, but most are invited to take on the role. Most charities use word of mouth or existing networks to recruit trustees. If you are looking for new trustees, consider:

  • Promote the role through Southampton Voluntary Services (see above)
  • Who might be appropriate among your volunteers, supporters, donors, beneficiaries and colleagues in similar fields of work?
  • Organising an event or open day to publicise your organisation. You could take a stall at a local show or trade fair.
  • Finding out if any local companies have employee volunteering schemes.
  • Advertising in the local or national press, internet and through local community centres.
  • Advertising through local volunteer centre (details above).
