Safe in Sound is a nightlife outreach project which aims for young people to adopt safer, healthier attitudes to risk taking behaviour.
The project works within the night-time economy to give information and advice to youths on risky behaviour like substance use (including alcohol), sexual health and personal safety, offering support and distributing free contraception. Our work is carried out by volunteers at music events, festivals, nightclubs, bars and universities.
We are currently looking for some individuals to join our group of Health Outreach Volunteers going out a couple evenings a month. Training and out of pocket expenses (i.e. travel to and from events, taxis home after outreach, subsistence allowance) are provided to all project volunteers. An average evening would include speaking to a variety of different people about risk behaviour and giving information and advise on how to stay safe/healthy.
The project is looking to expand over the next year to adopt Team Leader volunteers, who will be in charge of outreach sessions and coordinating the other outreach volunteers. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to pursue a career in management who may want some extra experience – or for someone to become more involved in the way the project runs. Anyone who becomes a volunteer will have the potential to move down this route as part of a natural progression.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for honest and reliable individuals who are open-minded and non-judgemental to join our volunteering team. People who have experience and an interest in the nightlife within Southampton and who enjoy music. Anyone who wants to get involved with the project will be welcomed and invited out to shadow our current volunteers on an outreach session.
Where are we based?
Safe in Sound is based within Southampton Voluntary Services (Kingsland Square, St Marys Street – Opposite St Marys Surgery). The project outreach is mostly around the Southampton city centre area.
Safe in Sound really values its volunteers and all the contributions they bring, in ways of time, experience and value. Below is some feedback on the project from those who are already involved:
“It feels so good when someone really benefits from the information I have given them. All the training comes flooding back when it needs to. I am enjoying every minute of outreach work!” – Christa Ellis, Health Outreach Volunteer
“Hi, my name’s Laura and I have been volunteering for Safe in Sound for around two months. When I first joined the team I was hoping to gain some experience in an Admin role which would help me when applying for jobs under the same title. This role has allowed me to explore multiple avenues in Admin, as well as taking on varied jobs each week, including research, data input and updating the social networking sites. Volunteering at Safe in Sound has continually helped me to gain more skills which I can put on my CV, and use for other jobs in the future.“ - Laura Stephens, Admin / Office Volunteer
